Power Plant Field Services & Commissioning
Macek Power field work comprises a large portion of our overall services. We often spend more time in the field than in the office. Although we travel worldwide, our international work most frequently takes us to Latin America and the Caribbean. Our field services include installation of turbine-generator packages, outage support as owner’s engineer or technical director, inspections, steam path geometry measurement for rerate studies, and fact gathering for failure analysis or insurance adjusters. Our capability and experience in the field under a wide variety of conditions augments your staff and leaves you with peace of mind.
Field Support Services and Example Projects
PACKAGE INSTALLATION
Let Macek Power provide technical direction for equipment package installation when you use your own or contracted millwright labor. Our experience includes complete skid-mounted packages as well as large units installed on specially engineered foundations.
COMMISSIONING
Both general and machine specific experience benefit the end-user with Macek Power in a commissioning role. Cold commissioning includes checks of controls, instrumentation, logic interlocks, and trip systems. Hot commissioning includes operation of the prime mover in unloaded and loaded conditions. Our scope may include: Supervision and inspection of mechanical assembly and installation, instrumentation function checks, Trip logic checks, Shaft alignment, Lube oil system flushing, Rated-speed no-load operation, Full-load start-up, and Vibration analysis.
STEAM PATH MEASUREMENT
A portable coordinate measurement machine (CMM) is used to measure the axial locations of rotor components in a shop as part of a rerate project. Among other applications, measurements support the development of computer models, which may be used for stress analysis or performance simulation, to support replacement part manufacturing, or perhaps as part of an instrumentation retrofit.
OUTAGE SUPPORT
Serving as owner’s engineer, Macek Power interfaced directly with General Electric on behalf of the equipment owner for a major inspection of a General Electric MS5001 gas turbine generator. During the approximately 8-week outage, Macek Power was able to procure “new old surplus” critical replacement parts that were otherwise unavailable from the OEM.
GAS PATH AUDIT
During this project for a biomass-fired power plant located inside a sugar mill, Macek Power provided visual inspection of the gas path and reviewed measured running clearances. Based on our observations and corresponding benefit-cost analysis, our client decided to replace the shaft seals. Although the seals cost approximately $40,000, the plant realized nearly $200,000 savings in one year by way of increased output.
TECHNICAL DIRECTION
As your technical director, Macek Power will manage the millwright crew and other craft labor during the outage. Our advanced educational background and hands-on experience complement this service, seamlessly blending theory and practice.
FAILURE ANALYSIS
Macek Power investigated low-pressure end rotor blade failure in a 71-MW reheat turbine for an insurance adjuster. The adjuster, working on a “large and complex” claim, needed to identify to its customer, the insurer, who or what was responsible for the blade failure. For the investigating engineer, this is like detective work.
EXPERT WITNESS
Macek Power provides expert witness opinions for legal firms, insurance adjusters, and end users in matters pertaining to steam turbine maintenance work, steam turbine design, power plant design, and elements of power plant construction.
